In 1949, Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. Then named Onitsuka Co., Ltd., he renamed his company ASICS in 1977, based on the famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano", which translates to "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body". Taking the acronym of this phrase and ideal on life, ASICS was founded on the harmonious principle of a healthy, happy and fit lifestyle.
ASICS merchandise struck the US market in 1977, impressing with its athletic performance and technical advancements. Its products are equally renowned today.
Remarkable technological advancements in the production of shoes and clothing began in 1990, when the company opened the Research Institute of Sports Science in Kobe. Scientists, athletes and coaches have since collaborated to ensure they deliver the most innovative and proficient of performance products to their clients and customers. To this end goal, ASICS often invites athletes to visit its manufacturing headquarters, for the purpose of developing a tailor-made shoe or garment.
Analyzing the body’s movements with a variety of materials is the basis of every ASICS® product. Researchers at its Institute use high-speed cameras, sophisticated computer software, and hi-tech measuring equipment (including three-dimensional measuring systems) to ensure shoes & garments fit perfectly. Shock absorption systems, anti-over pronation features, out-soles with Wet Grip® Rubber, and water-resistant clothing are just some of ASICS' innovative technological features that put their products to the test.
In 2011, ASICS became the official kit manufacturer for the Australian Cricket Team.
